Harriet Roach started her working life as an actress, Dr. Who and Blakes 7 being among her notable credits. After the birth of her two sons she changed direction to devote her time to them and to two of her other passions – organic gardening and sewing. Not only is Harriet a fine needlewoman, she is also a committed advocate for the use of natural fabrics and sustainable energy. This combination led her to create Cattapilla Designs from her home on Bere Island in County Cork, Ireland, where wind, sun and inspiring views over the Atlantic Ocean provide her with all the power and imagination she needs to design her beautiful bags and cushions. She seeks out her vintage materials, buttons and trimmings in all corners of the world, skilfully putting them together to create an item that you can be certain is a one-off. Re-cycling is a very unstylish word for an absolutely fundamental part of Harriet’s ethos; she feels compelled to save the embroideries sewn so patiently and delicately by our great-grandmothers – to get them out of long forgotten corners of cupboards and give them fresh new life. Today’s fashion for nostalgic country style gives you another chance to appreciate their artistry as a decorative object reinvented for today.
